Current paid media strategies are almost entirely dominated by performance-centric approaches, which may seem like a great idea given the hype that so-called performance marketing is currently receiving. But the reality is that when marketers put all their eggs in this one basket, they kill their future potential for greater prosperity—similar to what happens to those who practice slash-and-burn agriculture in global rainforests. Sure, you might get a quick reward in the form of reaching easy converts (or a productive first crop), but you also sacrifice your ability to build up your demand and reach the deeper layers of customers who need repetition and the creation of demand through various channels in order to be inspired enough to take action. You forfeit long-term advertising effectiveness in favour of short-term profit results spurred by the the efficiency of performance marketing
