Gizem Yarbil Gurol is the Head of Social Media for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), within the Public Advocacy and Campaigns team based in The Hague. She manages UNOCHA’s corporate social media accounts, and provides training and support to regional and country offices.


Before joining UNOCHA, Gizem led the regional communications and advocacy at UN Women’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia for eight years. In this role, she managed regional media outreach, social media and digital campaigns, advocacy initiatives and communications partnerships, in addition to overseeing website management. She also supported and provided guidance to 12 country offices in the region.


Prior to UN Women, Gizem worked as a journalist, which ignited her passion for international affairs, politics and humanitarian issues. Her journalism career spans several American and International news outlets, including Al Jazeera English, PBS and Reuters.


Gizem holds a Master’s Degree from Columbia University, Graduate School of Journalism and a Bachelor’s Degree from Boston University, College of Communications.
